Epilepsy South Central Ontario will be introducing a new program called UPLIFT (Using Practice and Learning to Increase Favourable Thoughts), a mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy program that improves depression, and overall psychological quality of life.
Groups of 5-8 adults with epilepsy meet virtually for an hour once a week for 8 weeks. There will be groups for people living with epilepsy, and for caregivers of people with epilepsy, but all participants must be 18 years of age or older.
The sessions review different ways living with epilepsy can affect mental health and teaches valuable coping strategies. Some topics include coping and relaxing, monitoring thoughts, and preventing future low moods.
A pilot project found that UPLIFT participants had improved depression, anxiety, and psychological quality of life – even a full year after they finished the program.
To be eligible, potential participants must:
- be at least 18 years old.
- have epilepsy or a seizure disorder.
- feel that they have trouble managing anxiety and/or depression.
